You should use another user if you are giving Redmine administrator to people you don't trust and don't want them to know the root ldap password, but this will do just fine if you are the administrator of both systems. This could be another user with the right permissions or you could even allow (but don't!) anonymous browsing/query of the LDAP server. Update: As far as backing up 'apache', as I state in my comment below - you dont need or want to back up your apache installation. To clarify and expand on the answer above, you need this parameters in Account because you are using the zimbra user and password for the LDAP directory connection. mysqldump -single-transaction -userusername -passwordyourpassword redminedatabase > backup.sql It will dump the entire contents of the redminedatabase to the backup.sql file. It seems to be a problem in the Redmine.pm which is written in Perl, but I don't know much about Perl. Reason: 'Bad file descriptor' 'REDMINE' is the user which is used for the LDAP. On the fly user creation: empty (didn't try it) Specifically, whenever a user account lacks this attribute and they try to log into Redmine (using on-the-fly user creation to create their account), they get a 404 error page with Redmine saying: 'The page you were trying to access doesn't exist or has been removed.' I think this may be expected behavior, but it is unclear. In the Apache error.log was an error like this: Authen::Simple::LDAP Failed to bind with dn 'REDMINE'. In this case, Redmine does not fall out from the loop, but rather it plays nice with Microsoft Domain Active Directory or another LDAP compatible service. LDAP filter: should be empty because there is some kind of issue between the Zimbra LDAP filter and Redmine's. In corporate usage scenarios, companies often rely on LDAP services, such as Microsoft Active Directory (AD) for user authentication, or overall digital identity management.
